Heritage

Picture
Montague United Methodist Church is part of the United Methodist denomination, which, in turn, traces its roots back to John and Charles Wesley, who lived in England during the 18th Century.

The Wesleys, ministers of the Anglican Church, sought to renew and revitalize the church through disciplined and systematic prayer, study of Scripture, good works and mutual accountability. Their efforts became to be known as the Methodist Movement, which gave rise to the Methodist Church, and eventually to the United Methodist Church.

One of the distinctive features of our heritage is the seeking after a balance in one’s faith life between the personal and the social, between what John Wesley called “holiness of heart and holiness of life.”  Wesley had the passionate conviction that the Christian faith is best lived out when one both cultivates one’s relationship with God in Christ through worship, prayer and the study of Scripture, and engages one’s fellow human beings in acts of mercy and justice.
