Growth Group Opportunities @ White Lake UMC 2020

At White Lake UMC, we believe that life is a team sport – best done together. Growth groups are a great way to meet new friends, grow in your relationship with God and just have fun! I don’t know about you, but I have great intentions. The trouble is, I’m not always so good at following through on my great intentions. When I’m part of a small group, I find I grow spiritually, and I stay focused on the path I believe God wants for me. It is through relationships with others in a small group setting that we best learn what following Jesus looks like.  We have several growth groups forming this fall. Regardless of your age and no matter where you are on your faith journey, we’d love to have you join us!  You can find interest sign-up sheets at the Information Desk in the Welcome Center.

Weekly Adult Bible
& Book Studies

Covenant Discipleship Group
A Covenant Discipleship group is 5-7 persons who meet together for one hour to
hold one another mutually accountable for their discipleship. The group is guided by a covenant the group writes, shaped by the General Rule of Discipleship:  To witness to Jesus Christ in the world and to follow his teaching through acts of compassion, justice, worship and devotion under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.   This covenant serves as the agenda for the weekly meeting. This group is not where discipleship happens, but where its members make sure that it happens the rest of the hours of the week. This means that the focus of conversation during the one hour meeting is discipleship, what each member of the group has done, or not done, during the past week to follow the teachings of Jesus in their daily lives.

Soul Reset
This is a 6-week study for everyone who moves at breakneck speed through their daily lives, often relying only on their own strength to bring God’s kingdom on earth. Jesus shows us a different way, an easier, unforced rhythm of what kingdom work looks like. It’s a balance of work, rest, play, worship, exercise, and eating well – spiritual practices that keep our souls hydrated and healthy as we do the work of the church in the world.   Soul Reset is a call for the church and all of Jesus’ disciples to reset and reorder their lives around spiritual practices, to learn to walk through our difficult seasons with our souls connected to the source of Living Water so that we don’t burn out or break down. And if we do burn out or break down, we learn to lift one another up and point one another back to Jesus.

Christianity 101
What exactly is the Bible?  Where did it come from?  How do I use it?   Who is God?  Who is this Father, Son and Holy Spirit I keep hearing about?  Somebody said I need to be saved.  From what?  How
does that happen?   If you would really like to get some plain answers about what it means to be a Christian and what Christians believe, sign up for the next Christianity 101 class with Pastor Mike.  For more information, contact him at: (231) 631-4712 or pastormikeriegler@gmail.com.

A Disciple’s Path
A 6-week study learning what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and how to grow in our spiritual journey – to deepen our love for God and our love for others.

Peace with Justice Team
Mission Statement: Peace is often defined as maintaining the status quo. Our Peace with Justice team is a non-political Christ-centered group that seeks out those aspects of the status quo that perpetuate discrimination and disenfranchisement in our community and the world. We build awareness of these issues, create venues for nuanced discussion and provide action steps for interested congregation members. Members of the congregation will be encouraged to use the team for feedback and ideas for community outreach ideas. Team chair is Ruth Grenell.

Sisters Class
Sisters is for all women at any stage of life. We use a variety of study resources that bring lively discussion and heartfelt sharing.   We will be meeting on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at the White Lake UMC. Due to Covid-19 guidelines, childcare is not currently provided.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study
Each Tuesday morning at 10:00 folks gather together with Pastor Mike for an hour and a half to study the Bible.  This takes place at the White Lake UMC in Montague, at 8555 Cook Street.  This group is open to anyone who wishes to attend and can be joined at any time.  The unique thing about this study is that the subject scripture is always whatever the pastor is going to preach on the following Sunday.  This means you get a sneak peek at the upcoming sermon and are prepared to have greater understanding.  Also, it means that each study is complete on its own—you never have to worry about falling behind.  To join just show up (bring a Bible or we’ll give you one!) or contact Pastor Mike for more information at: (231) 631-4712 or pastormikeriegler@gmail.com.

Thursday Evening Book Study with Pastor Mike
Each Thursday evening at 7:00 at the White Lake UMC in Montague, at 8555 Cook Street, a group of those who study the bible meets with Pastor Mike to learn more about God and Holy Scripture.  The topic (usually a book of the Bible) is chosen by the group and studied until we declare ourselves finished.  Then, something new is chosen.  This group likes to talk and explore, so a great number of things are learned along the way.  All are welcome to join in at any time. To join just show up (bring a Bible or we’ll give you one!) or contact Pastor Mike for more information at: (231) 631-4712 or pastormikeriegler@gmail.com.
